University of Malta Academics receive best author award for research on Generative AI and Lesson Study

Dr James Calleja, UNESCO Chair on Teacher Professional Development using Lesson Study, and Dr Patrick Camilleri from the University of Malta have been awarded the ‘Best Author Award’ by the International Journal for Lesson and Learning Studies for their 2025 research paper, “Primary school teachers’ perceptions towards the use of generative AI in teaching using lesson study”. Dr Patrick Camilleri is a Board Member on the Maltese Media Literacy Development Board (MLDB).

Published in volume 14, issue 3 of the journal, the paper explores primary school teachers’ perceptions of using generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) in teaching through Lesson Study, a collaborative professional development approach in which educators work together to plan, observe and reflect on lessons with a focus on student learning.

The journal’s editorial team and reviewers recognised the paper for its methodological rigour, theoretical depth and contribution to advancing understanding in the field of lesson and learning studies. The award also acknowledges the clarity, coherence and scholarly significance of the research.

The award, which featured in the World Association of Lesson Studies (WALS) Newsletter this October, will also be announced during the upcoming annual which will be held online between 2 to November 2026.

This achievement follows Dr Calleja’s receipt of the ‘’ in 2024, awarded by the British Society for Research into Learning Mathematics for his paper on teachers’ structuring of mathematical inquiry lessons, published in the Research in Mathematics Education journal. Together, these recognitions highlight the contribution of University of Malta academics to international research in mathematics education, teacher professional development, GenAI and Lesson Study.
