Rev. Dr Kevin Schembri launches international marriage report in Rome
Rev. Dr Kevin Schembri, Head of the Department of Pastoral Theology, Liturgy and Canon Law at the University of Malta, has launched an international research report on marriage in Rome after co-authoring the publication with Professors Emeriti Thomas Knieps-Port le Roi and Johan De Tavernier of KU Leuven. The report was presented on 12 May 2026 at the John Paul II Pontifical Theological Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences before a capacity audience during a study day organised for the occasion.
The 127-page report, entitled , examines contemporary Catholic teaching and legislation on marriage in the light of the Second Vatican Council and the lived realities of the faithful, and proposes a number of recommendations for the further development of the treatment of marriage in both the Catechism of the Catholic Church and the Code of Canon Law.
The report is the outcome of a six-year international research project coordinated by the International Academy for Marital Spirituality (INTAMS), with Schembri serving as one of the project's coordinators. The project brought together 29 additional experts from 25 academic institutions and research centres worldwide, including Rev. Prof. Emmanuel Agius, from the University of Malta's Faculty of Theology.
