Maltese schools set to use 'My Fitness Journal' for the first time following successful inaugural IPES Workshop

The Institute for Physical Education & Sport (IPES) successfully delivered its inaugural My Fitness Journal workshop, equipping an enthusiastic first cohort of educators with innovative tools to promote active lifestyles, health, and holistic development among primary and secondary school students.

The session brought together 16 Physical Education teachers from State, Church, and Independent schools across Malta who teach students in Years 6 to 8. The collaborative workshop focused on integrating physical activity, personal responsibility, and healthy habits both inside and outside the classroom.

Professor Andrew Decelis opened the session by underscoring the significance of introducing Malta’s first dedicated student fitness journal. He explained that physical activity cannot end when the school bell rings; rather, this new resource acts as a practical extension of PE lessons into the home. Prof. Decelis also emphasised the critical need for continuous health and fitness monitoring to guide children, foster self-reflection, and help them take charge of their own lifestyle habits.

He also pointed to the role of modern technology in guiding student fitness development and tracking progress. In particular, he underscored how the My Fitness Journal serves as a key resource for increasing daily active time while encouraging children to reflect on broader dimensions of wellbeing beyond the physical domain.

During the practical segment of the workshop, delivered a step-by-step walkthrough detailing how the student journal and accompanying teacher’s handbook can be seamlessly integrated into educators' scheme of work. She demonstrated how learning outcomes can be strengthened through varied, engaging activities that originate at school and extend into the home.

The My Fitness Journal targets a comprehensive set of developmental domains, including physical, social, cognitive, moral, and values-based growth, while encouraging children to embrace personal challenges. As a practical bonus for daily living, the journal also features a selection of simple, nutritious recipes to support healthy eating habits.

"It was inspiring to see such an enthusiastic group of educators committed to promoting active lifestyles and supporting the holistic development and wellbeing of their students," stated the IPES team. "We are looking forward to seeing the My Fitness Journal make a tangible, positive impact across schools in Malta."
