On Wednesday 8 and Thursday 9 July 2026, the consortium gathered in Kozani, Greece for the official kick-off meeting of the project SchoolMedDiet - Co-creating Living Labs to bring the Mediterranean Diet back to schools, a project funded by the PRIMA programme and coordinated by the University of Western Macedonia.
Bringing together ten partners from five Mediterranean countries (Greece, France, Malta, Morocco and Tunisia), the two-day meeting marked the start of a three-year journey to transform school food environments across the Mediterranean, with the use of AI and VR-powered educational tools and resources.
SchoolMedDiet is a transnational Innovation Action that aims to re-establish the Mediterranean Diet (MD) as a cornerstone of healthy, sustainable and inclusive school food systems across the Mediterranean region.
In response to PRIMA Call Topic 1.3.1, the project brings together digital innovation, community-based engagement and policy transformation to empower children, families, educators and public authorities, in co-shaping food environments, that align with MD principles and values.
The project aims to establish 4 national living labs in Greece, Malta, Morocco and Tunisia, functioning as participatory innovation ecosystems embedded in primary and secondary schools. These living labs will serve as a platform for co-designing, testing and scaling MD-based practices through the engagement of students, teachers, parents, municipalities, local farmers, SMEs, researchers and policymakers.
University of Malta is a partner in this project, with Dr Foteini Pavli from the Department of Food Science, Nutrition and Dietetics, Faculty of Health Sciences serving as the Principal Investigator.
