Department of Pathology research featured at the ISTH 2026 congress in Paris
Researchers from the Department of Pathology within the Faculty of Medicine & Surgery, University of Malta, contributed to the scientific programme of the (ISTH) .
This congress, held in Paris, France, from 11 to 15 July 2026, brought together more than 6,000 clinicians and scientists from around the world, making it the largest in-person ISTH meeting in more than a decade.
Dr Nicoletta Riva Senior Lecturer within the Department of Pathology, participated as an invited speaker in an Expert Insight Session on the management of cerebral and retinal vein thrombosis.
She also delivered an oral communication entitled .
The DUST study, a large international prospective study involving 23 centres across 9 countries and supported by an ISTH Scientific and Standardization Committee (SSC) Small Grant, evaluated the safety and effectiveness of direct oral anticoagulants in patients with unusual-site venous thrombosis. The study was also selected among the ISTH 2026 Highlights, a showcase featuring ten outstanding abstracts presented at the congress.
The Department's research was further represented through three poster presentations. Dr Daniel Farrugia , Visiting Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Pathology and Haematology Resident Specialist at Mater Dei Hospital, presented ” .

Applied Biomedical Science student Mr Mattias Ellul presented .
The projects were conducted within the Department's Coagulation Research Group, led by Prof. Alexander Gatt , Professor within the Department of Pathology and Consultant Haematologist and Clinical Lead in Coagulation at Mater Dei Hospital.
The group's success is built on close collaboration between clinicians, researchers and laboratory scientists, together with the expertise and dedication of the staff of the Coagulation and Haematology Laboratories, particularly Mr Kevin Vella, Executive Allied Health Practitioner.
This multidisciplinary approach exemplifies the close partnership between the University of Malta and the Department of Pathology at Mater Dei Hospital, advancing research in thrombosis and haemostasis.
Participation in the ISTH Congress provided an excellent opportunity to disseminate research from the University of Malta, strengthen international collaborations and contribute to advances in the diagnosis and management of thrombotic and bleeding disorders.
