It was clearly Inspired by the recent success of the Spanish Inquisition, which in turn had been set up to suit the particular needs of the new and growing nation-empire that was Spain. This new Tribunal, more commonly known as the Holy Office, was mainly intended to oppose the doctrines of Luther and the other flourishing Protestant sects. The Holy Supreme Congregation, under Cardinal Giovanni Pietro Caraffa (later Pope Paul IV), gained among its many privileges that of creating Inquisitors who were to be given the appropriate number of staff to help them in any town, province, or place. The first attempt was also made to compile an Index of prohibited books deemed likely to propagate false teachings. Tibdil politiku radikali, imbagħad, ma jistax ma jqanqalx mill-qiegħ is-saff sod fejn bħallikieku tidher l-aktar l-identita milqugħa u mistqarra bħala komuni. Għad li l-kronologija tal-Ä¡rajjiet politiÄ‹i hi Ä‹ara, il-kronologija tal-Ä¡rajja ta' l-ispirtu m'hijiex. M'hix ħaga ħafifa, ngħidu aħna, li wieħed igħid meta daħlu x-xejriet reÄ‹enti fil-poeżija Maltija. Xi elementi minnhom jinstabu diÄ¡a f'Rużar Briffa. Dibattitu dwar il-'moderniżmu' (f'dan il-każ ir-realiżmu) insibuh diÄ¡a mfisser bit-Taljan f'Malta fis-seklu l-iehor. Dawn il-ftit riflessjonijiet ħfief huma biżżejjed biex wieħed jifhem kemm il-kritika ma taqtax linja dritta bħalma tagħmel l-istorjografija politika li tistħarreg il-Ä¡rajjiet u mhux ix-xejriet, il-fehmiet, l-attitudnijiet u I-bqija.
