This study-unit introduces students to the science of collecting data from satellite, drones, marine vehicles, radar and other instruments to answer vital questions about the state of the environment. It takes into consideration the many factors that are used for environmental monitoring and assessment. This study-unit is aimed at providing students with the knowledge to apply environmental observation data analysis to research interests falling within the scope of this postgraduate course. This study-unit is therefore intended to provide the necessary background and skills to enable students to use this tool for their thematic research work. This study-unit will also assist the students to develop an expertise for application to vital contemporary problems in line with the overall course's thematics. Furthermore, this study-unit will introduce students to a range of technologies in a breadth of application contexts and synergy in terms of data analysis and software functionality.

Study-unit Aims

  • Discuss advanced theory and practical skills for the application of environment monitoring techniques;
  • Identify the recent advances in Remote Sensing research and its role in society;
  • Apply analytical and spatial thinking skills needed for successful use of environment monitoring in solving spatial environmental problems.

Learning Outcomes: Knowledge and Understanding

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Explain the fundamental concepts of remote sensing and spatial analysis techniques;
  • Evaluate and distinguish remote sensor systems, basic radiative transfer, etc;
  • Analyze data to evaluate scientific hypotheses and arguments in remote sensing;
  • Critically analyse the impacts and applications of environmental monitoring for habitat and species, water, air and soil quality;
  • Apply a range of analytical techniques using remote sensing and specialised software toward solving quantitative problems related to environmental monitoring and analysis. /li>

Learning Outcomes: Skills

By the end of the study-unit the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate excellent proficiency in environmental observation data processing and analysis;
  • Demonstrate how to access and/or capture different sources of remotely sensed data, demonstrate the process of generating data, and discuss the fundamental concepts of data quality;
  • Recognize advanced analysis and interpretation skills needed in remote sensing;
  • Apply practical remote sensing and GIS procedures for assessing and solving environmental and societal problems;
  • Communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, advanced concepts in remote sensing;
  • Develop remote sensing project management and team work skills.
